Intern Site Descriptions and Job Roles

A Grassroot Soccer internship offers interns a wide variety of experiences depending on the site placement and assigned job responsibilities. Current intern sites include Cape Town, Khayelitsha, Alexandra and Soweto in South Africa; and Lusaka, Zambia. Interns may indicate preferences for location and job responsibilities, but GRS makes assignments based first on its program needs as well as on each intern’s skill-set and experience.

Typically, interns who are placed throughout the sites in South Africa and Zambia gain valuable field experience. Many of the interns at these sites are assigned as programs interns and often have broad responsibilities, which range from supporting coaches (driving to-and-from the field, networking with schools and community members, assisting with trainings/graduations, etc.) to administrative office tasks (printing certificates, gathering and entering M&E data, participating in strategic meetings/calls, etc.). Generally speaking, these interns provide overall logistical support for the staff and volunteers who directly implement the GRS curriculum.

Roughly half of the interns are placed in GRS’s headquarters office in Cape Town, South Africa. Many of these assignments involve “behind the scenes” roles which support the work of staff and interns in the other sites. This work encompasses all of the departments within GRS and interns are assigned on an individual basis to a department based on their skills and interest. A description of the departments within GRS is listed below.
