Intern Site Descriptions and Job Roles

A Grassroot Soccer internship offers interns a wide variety of experiences depending on the site placement and assigned job responsibilities. Current intern sites include Cape Town, Khayelitsha, Alexandra and Soweto in South Africa; and Lusaka, Zambia. Interns may indicate preferences for location and job responsibilities, but GRS makes assignments based first on its program needs as well as on each intern’s skill-set and experience.

Typically, interns who are placed throughout the sites in South Africa and Zambia gain valuable field experience. Many of the interns at these sites are assigned as programs interns and often have broad responsibilities, which range from supporting coaches (driving to-and-from the field, networking with schools and community members, assisting with trainings/graduations, etc.) to administrative office tasks (printing certificates, gathering and entering M&E data, participating in strategic meetings/calls, etc.). Generally speaking, these interns provide overall logistical support for the staff and volunteers who directly implement the GRS curriculum.

Roughly half of the interns are placed in GRS’s headquarters office in Cape Town, South Africa. Many of these assignments involve “behind the scenes” roles which support the work of staff and interns in the other sites. This work encompasses all of the departments within GRS and interns are assigned on an individual basis to a department based on their skills and interest. A description of the departments within GRS is listed below.

Department Descriptions and Job Roles

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT INTERN: The business development intern primarily focuses on proposal writing and individual giving activities such as fund raising events.  Much of the role consists of supporting the grant writing process. This includes gathering supporting documents, assisting with budgets, researching funding opportunities and writing and editing.

COACH DEVELOPMENT INTERN: Coach development is a unique program that GRS offers with the purpose of helping SKILLZ coaches find employment, further study, Learnership or entrepreneurial opportunities following their roles with Grassroot Soccer.  The intern will help oversee implementation of the Coach Development Programme components and spend significant time with site staff and Programme interns across South Africa as well as with SKILLZ coaches themselves. This role is very unique in that the intern will split their time between the office in Cape Town and the site level.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS INTERN: The marketing & communications intern plays an important role creating quality collateral and communications materials for business development, leadership and site teams and in managing opportunities to increase awareness of Grassroot Soccer in South Africa. This position reports to the Marketing & Communications Coordinator and works closely with the Global Communications Director.

GLOBAL MONITORING & EVALUATION INTERN: The global monitoring & evaluation (M&E) intern assists with the coordination of M&E tools, processes and systems across all Grassroot Soccer (GRS) business units.  The role involves supporting all teams as they transition into the revamped data management system, “SKILLZ Scoreboard” (housed on Salesforce.com). This includes strengthening of the feedback loop and providing excellent support—with the primary goal of increasing site-level ownership over M&E data and processes. Additionally, the Global M&E intern oversees data flow processes, support with data quality controls, and develops M&E tools. The intern is encouraged to think creatively to keep GRS at the cutting edge of M&E processes.

GRSP MONITORING & EVALUATION INTERN: The Grassroot Soccer Partnerships Team (GRSP) oversees GRS’ relationships with the Peace Corps posts worldwide, as well as with other independent organizations. The Monitoring and Evaluation Intern for Partnerships team is responsible for overseeing the monitoring and evaluation activities of Grassroot Soccer’s implementing partners and the Peace Corps. This includes the creation of monitoring tools, the management of data flow on Salesforces.com, communication and troubleshooting with partners, and strategic thinking surrounding the evaluation of our programs.

SOUTH AFRICA MONITORING AND EVALUATION INTERN: The monitoring and evaluation intern will work closely with the research team in HQ to ensure that GRS programs are driven by the latest research in the sport-for-development, public health and education fields.  The intern will also assist in the development and design of monitoring and evaluation hard tools (both quantitative and qualitative) and support the continued development of GRS’s online M&E database. This intern will be responsible for the collection, coordination, analysis and dissemination of this data.

OPERATIONS AND PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT INTERN: Operations and People Development is a role that requires someone who is a “jack of all trades.” This role requires one who is creative and skilled in problem solving and who is willing to go the extra mile. Operations is unique at Grassroot Soccer in that it is the only department that plays a vital role in every programmatic area and business unit. As a result, no single day in Operations is like the next, and many tasks come up at a monent’s notice. The role is very rewarding in that it allows the intern to influence nearly all areas of Grassroot Soccer, work with nearly every employee, and have a tangible impact on the way the organization operates.

PARTNERSHIPS INTERN: The Grassroot Soccer Partnerships Team (GRSP) oversees GRS’ relationships with Peace Corps posts worldwide, as well as other independent organizations. The Partnerships Intern will assist the GRSP team, working closely with the Partnership Managers.  The focus of the Partnerships Intern’s work will include support with the preparation, execution, administration and reporting on GRSP programs/grants, monitoring & evaluation, and special projects as needed.

PROGRAMS INTERN:  The programs intern supports local programs to deliver effective interventions, support coaches, organize events (such as Holiday camps, HIV Counseling & Testing Events), and collect monitoring and evaluation data. This intern may be closely involved with coach recruitment and training, and will be responsible for supporting local staff with the planning, execution and evaluation of multiple concurrent projects. The intern will report directly to the site coordinator.

SOUTH AFRICA PROGRAMMES INTERN;  The South Africa HQ Programmes Intern helps liaise between HQ in Cape Town and Grassroot Soccer sites in Khayelitsha, Alexandra and Soweto. This role is heavily involved with implementation, planning and tracking programs. In addition, this role also involves assisting sites with needs regarding   programming, events and site visits.  The South Africa Programmes Intern will gain a very comprehensive understanding of how programmes are implemented and work closely with site interns and site coordinators.

STRATEGIC OPERATIONS & OUTREACH INTERN: As an intern you will work side by side with SA’s managing director to assist with community outreach and corporate engagement strategies.  You will work closely with the communications and business development teams as well as help populate our online donor management system (LGL.)  You will also help with communication and management of our SA board members.  This will include logistics and planning for our bi-annual board meetings as well as fundraising assistance.
